What is Hibiscus?
If your first thoughts of Hibiscus go to the tropical and beautiful red flowers your spot on! Hibiscus is a blooming plant, with red, yellow, peach or pink flowers, which can be eaten right from the plant. Hibiscus flowers are often utilized in salads, jams or tea.
The hibiscus tea is derived from a mixture of dried hibiscus flowers, leaves, and dark red cup-shaped flower centers called calyces.
Hibiscus is packed with antioxidant rich compounds that have been studied for their ability to lower blood pressure and promote optimal liver functioning. Hibiscus also functions as a diuretic which means it helps rid the body of excess fluids mostly water and sodium too.
The Hibiscus Watermelon Mock-tail is an amazing lower sugar alternative to the overly sweet store-bought drink mixes. The sweetness comes naturally from the watermelon and the hibiscus offers a nice tartness, similar to cranberry.
