The key to finding your happy weight? Step away from the scale…
Often body weight is considered a way to check in with your health but when you focus on body weight first, you lose sight of the essential parts of good health. Health becomes more about a number and physical appearance, less about actually feeling good and being happy.
Today you will learn just how to find your happy weight, no scale required.
What is Your Happy Weight?
“Your ‘happy weight’ is the weight you are when you feel healthy and happy. Your weight when you are not hyper focused about a number on the scale. You wear clothing that fits, no matter the size and you feel comfortable being in your own skin- your mind is clear, positive and respectful of your body. “
Finding your happy weight is a process that requires letting go of thoughts, and beliefs about your body that don’t support your happiness. Making peace with food, calling out disordered eating habits and taking your power back (away from the scale).
Why Check-In vs. Weigh In?
“Your body weight does not determine you’re health status, nor your success. The weight on the scale does not determine if you deserve to eat or how worthy you are to be loved.“
You can be healthy without regularly self-weighing. In fact, weighing yourself regularly can put a strain on mental health- increasing your risk for depression, anxiety, binge eating, psychological distress and also can result in losing weight too quickly.
The mindset “you’ll feel better once you lose weight”, is not supported by science, studies show the psychological “mood boost”, you feel from losing weight is temporary.
While diet cycling — the cycle of losing weight quickly, only to regain the weight, likely plus extra pounds from your original body weight, can cause damage to your heart and metabolism. This kind of weight loss/weight gain cycle, can result in increased difficulty to lose weight, if that was your goal from the start.
There are better directions to focus your energy and attention than your body weight.
“Checking in” with your body– its hunger, thirst, energy levels- can be increasingly challenging with a hyper focus on body weight. ‘Checking in’ is an excellent alternative to the scale, as it helps you tap into the amazing information your body has to share with you, to live out a life that is in alignment with your health goals and feels amazing.
What if Stepping Away from the Scale is Challenging?…
Developing habits of any kind take time, practice and patience. Making new changes is only going to be as challenging as you allow it to be. Your beliefs, readiness to change, and open mindset will determine the speed of your success.
The path to your goals is not linear, there are going to be “set backs”, or events that take you “off track” but typically these are just opportunities to learn and grow in disguise. Move past your fixation on body weight (and body image too), and you will find there is light, clarity of mind and health beyond your body weight.
Shifting your attention away from weight to your inner body signals, identifying your purpose and the WHY behind your drive to lose/gain weight, is a solid first step towards finding your happy weight. The weight where you feel incredible inside and out, thriving no matter what you weigh.
