So often the New Year is equated with the ideal time to take action, strive for goals and become NEW again. Today I’m sharing my take on new year’s resolutions and 5 ways to instantly nourish and reset at any time.
Around this time, there are expectations to have higher motivation, shiny new health routines and life changing goals. This type of thinking comes with a lot of pressure and those drastic changes are tough to keep rolling. New Year has a squeaky clean, fresh feel to it. It is seemingly an appealing time to start fresh. Although I’m not one to set “resolutions”, I do take time to reflect on the past year, highlight goals for the coming year and setting mantras that allow me to bring my best self into all my endeavors ahead.
Mantras are just positive affirmations, gentle reminders to manifest a better you. They are successful because they are flexible, leaving room for possibilities. One of the mantras I have been using lately is “Begin again”.
Every new moment is a chance to begin again.
We find ourselves seeking the right time for everything. Social constraints, calendar’s, holidays, and seasons all quietly dictate when it’s okay to celebrate, be happy, to work and to relax. By waiting for Monday or the right moment, we waste time and we limit ourselves. In reality we can begin again right now. Instead of waiting for a calendar to tell us it’s the right time to reset, restart and renew. Simply make those changes right when they manifest in your thoughts. And take the very next moment and begin again.
I plan on writing more about how to create mantras and set intentions daily. And more specifically how I use them to keep myself on track. For now, if you find yourself straying from your resolutions or feeling off balance here are some ways to instantly nourishing and reset.
5 ways to Nourish and Reset
-
1. Breathe
Breathing deeply and slowly activates our parasympathetic nervous system, making us feel calm and connected. Taking 8-10 deep breaths when you are feeling overwhelmed is a reliable strategy to de-stress, clear your mind and refocus.
-
2. Drink Water
Dehydration can make you feel groggy, and unfocused- especially in winter months when we may not feel thirsty. Herbal tea like (chamomile, lavender, or rose hips) and water with lemon are great ways to start fresh and stay hydrated. Begin your day with a liter of water so that you are ahead of the game; continue to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
-
3. Journal
Writing out your thoughts gives perspective, keeps you on track with your intentions and ambitions. It is a method to stay on top of both professional, personal goals and de-clutter your mind. Daily journaling may not be feasible for everyone but weekly or monthly journal entries can give you clarity. Use your phone or pencil and notebook, write freely.
-
4. Eat Greens
Add in greens every time you can! Spinach, kale, collards and broccoli all give your system a boost of fiber and nutrients. They are especially important when you are feeling under the weather. Blend them in juices, smoothies. Eat them whole sautéed, fresh or green powders are accessible when you are on the go. Greens nourish your blood, circulation and promote natural detoxification processes.
-
5. Decaffeinate
Coffee has excellent health benefits but some are super sensitive to the jittery side effects of caffeine (right here!). Caffeine can interrupt sleep cycles, increase stress hormones and derail your good health efforts. If you need an energy boost try a stretching for 5 minutes, a brisk walk outside, or a hot cup of herbal tea.
